Hey all,
I'm doing a final year project on "Vehicle Tracking using GPS". I have some idea about the project but do not know how to implement it.Please help me with your valuable suggestions

Well its fairly possible to do it in BE. but the only thing is it involves a lot of things which students cant do. like server development and front end design etc. on whole its a big project.

My suggestion would be, make a hardware part only and use OpenGTS as your front end software. Now this is totally feasible isn't it?

take a look at this:
http://opengts.sourceforge.net/

all you have to do is setup a small server with apache tomcat. for running jsp and listener software written in java. send data to server as per its requirement and your vehicle will be on map within no time

Hey Ajay,
Thanx for helping me out.
I would like to clarify certain doubts.

1)Initially what i was trying to incorporate was that I would be retrieving the parameters of GPS such as LAT and LONG on my cell and then manually entering it into Google maps to see the position.
2)But after going through what u said i feel that implementing what u said would be a great idea as it has a visual appeal too.So what changes do i need to incorporate in my existing circuitry(See the circuit and block diagram at http://www.8051projects.info/post/Vehicle-Tracking-System-using-GPS-and-GSM-modem.aspx)
3)Would OpenGTS would provide me Real time tracking( Will I be able to see the vehicle moving on the maps or there would be some delay but I would be able to see the movement)
4)Since I'm from Electronics and Telecom dept I do not know much about computer languages. So would you pls elaborate on your comment " all you have to do is setup a small server with apache tomcat. for running jsp and listener software written in java. send data to server as per its requirement and your vehicle will be on map within no time" What do I exactly need to do

Truly telling I do not trust BINU's projects anymore. they are made for selling not making.

OpenGTS is a big project in itself, which can make your life easy and tough at the same time the reason is its too complex for someone who is not from computer stream.

So what i am thinking is. I can support you people for making a simple front end design in PHP (i will code that no worries) + a server too (will do that too ) for your project.. PROVIDED >> you will have to submit this project to me after completion. This can be one of the best project ever published on website.

This frontend design can show your device location on google map + you can have track of position history as a report. whole data will be stored in Mysql database.

how will i submit it to you

with submit i mean, You have to send me soft copy of your report, schematics and coding. so i can publish it on website as your contribution. As you have seen other students have contributed to site, the same way.

You first have to finish up your hardware then we will see what to do. Get the GPS data, parse it. then finish the server communication part.

I dont think any tracker need a LCD on board.

All you need is a switch incase of any emergency happens you can send out an SMS or make a call or something.

so make your own schematic. you need 2 uarts in this project, try using an analog multiplexer (e.g CD4052) for muxing uart port.
